LEADERSHIP

Dr. Keith Hanna, Executive Director and Chair

Dr. Hanna has spent the past two years forging digital connections in South Africa. As well as bringing his own extensive background in developing world-class data-centric systems for AI applications, his approach is to partner with leaders in healthcare technologies worldwide to develop data-oriented software solutions that can be applied to global health problems at scale.

In South Africa, he and his team worked on scalable methods for eliminating loss to follow-up for HIV, while at the same time reducing the cost burden due to over-testing. He also developed patient-centric architectures to enable the sharing of medical records across remote clinics. The scope of this work has now greatly increased to develop reusable software APIs and Data Standards to enable integrators worldwide to integrate, test, deploy, refine, support and re-use highly capable systems without having to develop specialized component capabilities themselves. The goal is to disrupt solutions for global healthcare, much in the same way that Amazon Web Services (AWS) and other software-as-a-service capabilities have disrupted solutions elsewhere.

Dr. Hanna draws on his 25+ years’ experience in developing and deploying advanced AI and video solutions. Dr. Hanna spent 2 years working with physicians at the John Radcliff Hospital in Oxford, UK, while working on his D.Phil thesis on algorithms to measure change in cataract in the human eye for testing the efficacy of anti-cataract drugs. He held numerous positions at SRI International over a 15-year period, including Group Head, Vision Systems. He was also co-founder and CTO at EyeLock Corporation, a leading biometrics provider. He has over 25 publications and is an inventor on over 80 patents. In 2007 he was awarded the Most Influential Paper over the Decade from the International Association of Pattern Recognition, for his pioneering work in biometrics and iris recognition.

He received a B.A. in Engineering Sciences and a D.Phil in Medical Image Processing and Computer Vision, from Oxford University.
